Presented thesis that Schwanengesang should be re-ordered following the order of the poems in the poet’s collections and that two additional Rellstab settings of 1828 should be included to create a more cyclic set of songs consistent with the narrative themes found in Schubert’s two great song cycles. The Songs of Dmitri Shostakovich - manuscript to be published by Greenwood Press. Extensive study, the first in any language, of over 150 solo songs by Shostakovich; works with piano, chamber ensemble and orchestra are discussed in depth from both socio-historical and musicological perspectives.
